January is almost behind us. We are a week into the Whole Life Challenge. Dustin and Katharine are married and off on their honeymoon. The rest of us are left to settle in and get to work. How are you doing on those shiny New Year's Resolutions? Are you still going strong? Maybe you've had a setback or two but your resolve remains strong. Perhaps you've been waiting for the right time to get serious about them. Well, there is no time like the present. Now is the time to put your head down and make some real progress.
In thinking about that, I'd like to talk to you about mindset today. We all have days when a workout is about the last thing we want to do. Or, we feel overwhelmed by everything else that we HAVE to do so our workout feels more like an unpleasant chore. Believe it or not, I have these days too...a lot of them. You guys have heard me preach over and over about scheduling your workouts into your week and making them a priority. That's pretty effective most of the time, but I can talk myself out of that too. What I can't talk myself out of is the knowledge that what I do in the gym makes me better at everything else I do outside the gym.
When I think of my workouts as a tool to improve my productivity, my nutrition choices, my parenting skills, my relationships, my decision-making skills, AND my health; it is really hard to justify skipping it or even giving it a half-hearted effort. It becomes essential to having a successful day. It also changes the way I approach my workout from something that I just have to complete, to something that I embrace and savor. Of course I don't really savor wall balls, but I am trying to remind myself in the midst of the hard spots that they are serving a purpose far greater than a score on the whiteboard. That subtle shift in mindset makes a big difference for me. Give it a try.
