There is no question that sugar is a dangerous drug that reeks havoc on our health. Today we turn our attention to soybean oil. It sounds relatively harmless and is often lumped in with other oils under the name "vegetable oil". But is it?
When I was a kid, vegetable oil was touted as the "safe alternative to butter". My father worked manufacturing Crisco for as long as I can remember. We never used real butter and my parents still use spray-on-fat-free-no-calorie-butter-like-substances ON EVERYTHING. Not a stick of real butter to be found in their house. It is not unusual for an entire stick of butter to be consumed daily at our house. But even the astute consumer can be confused by which oils are really safe for consumption. We will tackle that another time as it has a multi-faceted answer. For now, let's look at soybean oil.
