I try very hard to keep this blog non-controversial. No politics, no religion, no negative commentary on what anyone else is doing. So please do not read this post as advocating CrossFit as a substitute or equivalent for spiritual practice or religion. It is not. But we also all know that what happen at Catacombs is much more than just "working out". There is a deeper camaraderie, a character building component, a more real connection that binds us together in an undefinable way. The genuine care and concern we have for one another is reminiscent of the church community in which I was raised. From that standpoint, I understand the analogy made by the New York Times in this article.
Ask me about the benefits of CrossFit and it won't take long for me to start talking about how it makes us better human beings...not just fitter. There are literally thousands of stories among the ranks of CrossFitters about how CrossFit has changed their lives or helped them to turn their lives around. Many of you in our community can tell similar stories. I'll leave the debate about whether that constitutes a designation as a "church" or "religion" to others. It doesn't really matter to me anyway. We will just keep going about our business trying to help people make positive changes in their health, fitness, and their lives.
