Meet Jacob

Many of you have seen Jacob (aka Clark Kent) around for awhile in the early mornings. He's been lurking in the background, quietly and humbly crushing workouts for about a year now. Recently, Jacob completed his CrossFit Level 1 coaching certification and has been working hard in the Catacombs Coaching Development Program. Jacob will be cutting his coaching teeth over Thanksgiving and joining the Catacombs Coaching Staff soon. We are very excited to have him on board as he brings a wealth of knowledge as well as genuine concern for each and every athlete.  Here is what he has to say for himself.

When did you start at Catacombs and why?  I first came to Catacombs a little over a year ago to a Murph event. I had been doing crossfit on my own for a couple years. My good friend Dustin invited me and although I was skeptical, I love the group classes and atmosphere.

What do you do to pay the bills? My wife Jenny and I work at a Christian nonprofit youth ministry called Cross Bar X Youth Ranch. We primarily run summer camps for low-income and inner-city kids but also work with several youth in and around Durango year-round. In the fall, we help run overnight outdoor education field trips for 5th grade classes.

How do you like to spend your time when not at work or the gym? I love just hanging out with my wife Jenny and son Abel. He is 10 months old, so we are loving every minute of it.

What do you want to see on the whiteboard when you walk in for a workout (favorite movements, time domains, workout style, etc.)? Anything with the word "squat", be it clean, snatch, or squat variations. I love lifting heavy (relatively speaking). I like short, sprint workouts the best.

What gives you a sense of dread when you see it on the whiteboard? Longer, grind-it-out workouts. My biggest weakness is running. Many of you have passed me on that portion of a workout a time or two.

How do you use your fitness outside of the gym or why do you care about being fit? My wife and I love to hike. Health is important to me because I want to be around learning how to do really hard things for a long time (I'd like to keep up with my kids). I feel so much better in every aspect of my life when I do this. And it's just fun to hurt.

Tell us about your coaching philosophy and why we should listen to you :) I know from coaching in the past and my own athletic endeavors that human nature lends itself towards taking the easy way out - we don't push ourselves nearly as hard as we could or should. I come so much closer to accomplishing the things God created me to do when I have a good coach, teacher, or mentor pushing me.

My goals in coaching are to help you move, be, and live better. We all come so much closer to reaching our potential when someone helps us get there. I want to help you get there.
