Our next Pro Night is July 17th at 7 PM. What is Pro Night? We bring in an expert to give a free talk on topics related to health and wellness that matter to you, our community. It’s an opportunity to spend some time with athletes that you don’t cross paths with daily and learn some practical information that will help you be healthier over the long haul.
For July, our featured Pro is Clayton LaBaume. Clayton is a regular in our early morning classes but is also the Clinical Coordinator for the Mercy Orthopedic Bone Health Clinic. Our topic this month is bone health. Specifically, we are going to talk about decreased bone density, fragility fractures, and osteoporosis. Think this doesn’t apply to you? Wrong. What you do today for your bone health could keep you out of a nursing home in the future. Learn about risk factors and the role that strength training can play in prevention. Here’s what Clayton had to say:
Osteoporosis is a disease of weak bones due to decreased bone density and changes in bone quality. This can significantly increase the risk for fractures. In the United States, osteoporosis is responsible for 2 million fractures every year. The good news is that osteoporosis is both preventable in many instances, and treatable. There are fundamental measures involving exercise, diet, and home safety that we should keep in mind at all stages of our lives to prevent osteoporosis and related fractures. I once heard of osteoporosis being described as a pediatric problem with geriatric consequences. I think that this is a great way to think about it. The choices and the lifestyles we choose can affect our health down the road – including our bone health!
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain some relevant knowledge! This talk is open to Catacombs members and the greater community. Bring someone who could benefit from learning about bone health.
