Our community is an amazingly supportive environment. We know each other’s names; we check in on someone that has been missing for a few days; we encourage every athlete down to the last rep to finish their workout. Those of you that have been around for awhile set the example by welcoming new faces and showing them the ropes. As you mature as athletes and the membership expands, it is important to find new ways to strengthen the bonds of connection. I’ve also talked with many of you who are tackling some tough challenges or working on big goals, and you use the support of the community to help you on this journey.
We’ve been noodling on a way to package the accountability and support you find in class and apply it on a larger, yet smaller scale. What am I talking about? We want to apply the energy and accountability that you find in a group class to some of the goals you are working on. And, we want to do it in a smaller group format to allow those bonds of connection to strengthen. Nothing strengthens my resolve to meet a challenge more than committing to a few trusted friends that I’m going to get it done. It is this power that we want to harness to continue the process of refining ourselves as human beings.
So what are these Accountability Groups going to look like? Well, I’ll be honest. This is my first rodeo in this arena. Starting Monday, we will have a sign up sheet at the front desk. If you are interested in participating, put your name on the list. You can request one other person to be in your group but we will have final say in determining the make up of the groups. In order to participate, you must meet the following criteria:
- Commit to specific goals around health, self-improvement, and fitness. You must craft one goal in each of the three domains and they should be reasonably attainable within a 3-month time frame.
- Share your goals, your successes, and your failures with your accountability group. It doesn’t work if you aren’t willing to be honest.
- Put incredible effort toward success; muster the resiliency to keep going when you fail; and follow through with your commitment when the goal is no longer shiny and fashionable but rather monotonous and lonely.
- Support and NOT JUDGE the other members of your group for the duration of the project.
- Respect the privacy of your group.
- Accept constructive feedback and support from your team.
Deadline for sign up is Friday, March 6th at which point we will finalize groups and appoint a team captain. Each group is responsible for coming up with it’s own communication strategy. At a minimum, this should include a team kickoff meeting and a plan for weekly check-ins (email, text, team WOD, coffee, otherwise). It is our hope that some teams take it much further than this and find ways to allow it to be a massive force for positive change in their lives. You will get as much out of this as you put into it. We will periodically assign homework to team captains who will then work with their teams to get them done, but groups will largely be self-directed The first task will be for everyone to craft and communicate their goals to their teams at their team kickoff meeting.
Accountability groups will run for 3 months, at which time we will evaluate their effectiveness and determine how to go forward. Participation is 100% optional but we ask that you only sign up if you are serious about committing and are ready to put in the effort. There is no cost for participating. You are doing the work; we are merely providing a structure to help you all help yourselves and one another.
Goals can be big or small and all over the map. They can be as simple as committing to a certain number of workouts per week or a 400 pound deadlift or recording your workouts for 3 months. Or they can be big and life changing like changing jobs, quitting smoking or getting off sugar. They should be measurable, attainable, and target areas in your life that want to improve. You must commit to a minimum of 1 goal in each of the 3 categories (health, fitness, and self-improvement).
Ok, if you read all the way to the end of this, I’m guessing something in here resonated with you. It is our hope that this can be a powerful tool in the journey to be better human beings. Be the first to sign up and help us make this a huge and powerful force for positive change.
